A Melancholia Wedding

Melancholia, written and directed by  Lars von Trier, is a movie about the end of the earth (not your typical wedding inspiration).  The title, Melancholia, refers to both the gloomy state of mind of Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and the red planet that is threatening to collide with Earth. The movie is heart-wrenching and yet hauntingly beautiful. While we watched in horror as Justine slowly sabotages her own perfectly planned wedding day, we couldn’t help but to be inspired by the meticulous details of the wedding.

These first three images are from the opening scene of the movie. We can’t help but repeat ourselves by describing them as hauntingly beautiful.

WHAT INSPIRES US: The ball gown style dress with rouched bodice which is perfectly accented by the cathedral length veil trimmed in antique-looking lace. While we do not know who designed the dress, we do know that the Costume Director for the film was Manon Rasmussen.

A simple bouquet of lily of the valley flowers is refined yet whimsical. We love the utter simplicity of this bridal bouquet. The majestic wedding location, a castle like mansion plays reception host. Lastly, the lily pads floating on the water leave us with visions of reception decor and center pieces. Toss in  flowers at random as the finishing touch.

The traditional white bow tie is simply classic and regardless if you like roses or not, the silk rose sleeves worn by the bride are certainly a fashion statement.

When was the last time you saw a bride wear her full length veil for the entire reception? This was a popular trend back in the days but began to fade out in the 1990’s – could this be a nod at the rebirth of the veil?

Again, we just simply love the location. The expansive green lawn provides space for guests to mingle outside. At this point in the movie the guests signed and wrote messages to the couple on what looked to be folded up pieces of paper, but were actually miniature hot air balloons which they then launched into the night sky (a twist on the dove or butterfly release). What a  fun and unique idea if you have enough outside space at your reception.

Here you get a feel of the regal room.  With the candelabras and crystal chandeliers the scene was breathtaking. And of course we cannot help but notice the brides adorable peep-toe heals.

Throughout the entire movie, including the end of the world scene, all we could think about was the design concepts for our next bride looking for a royal affair.

Peachy-Keen

For a soft romantic feel try peach mixed with soft shades of gold and taupe. A great thing about the color peach is that it can work for Spring, Summer, or Fall weddings. In Spring and Summer play up its romantic side with complementary shades of taupe and super pale pink. If you are planning a Fall wedding, try choosing richer accent colors such as gold and brown.
